The United States was not justified in using the atomic bomb to defeat Japan. The US dropped the bombs on innocent civilians, not against the military of Japan. The United States knew the bomb was going to be devestating, but the two bombings are the only two times a country has used atomic bombs against another country. Even months after the bombings, innocent civilians died from radiation sickness, flash burns, and other injuries.
