A-Bomb

In your opinion, was America justified in using the atomic bomb in an effort to defeat Japan? Make sure to cite factual evidence from your readings in your response.

The United States was not justified in using the atomic bomb to defeat Japan. The US dropped the bombs on innocent civilians, not against the military of Japan. The United States knew the bomb was going to be devestating, but the two bombings are the only two times a country has used atomic bombs against another country. Even months after the bombings, innocent civilians died from radiation sickness, flash burns, and other injuries.

Jews

According to your reading, America’s failure to extend more effective help to European Jews “may have owed as much to a failure of moral imagination as to a lack of either empathy or means” (809). In your opinion, which of these three factors was the primary reason for America’s limited assistance?

There three factors are: the Immigration Law of 1924, a lack of soldiers in Germany, and a lack of empathy toward the Jewish people. The primary reason for America's limited assistance is the Immigration Law of 1924 because the United States only wanted certain people immigrating to the states. This was a very racist Law because certain groups, such as the British, did not have restrictions on immigrating to the United States.

Battle Blog

Blitzkrieg, also known as lightning war was a rapid fire war. It was used by Germany. In 1939, Germany took over Poland starting World War II. Dunkirk was a port city on the border of France and Germany. Hilter had his generals halt for three days, and that gave the allies time to rescue 330,000 troops. The flaw in Blitzkrieg was found out when Germany invaded the Soviet Union,

Weekend Blog

Prompt: Compare and contrast “island-hopping” in the Pacific to the D-Day invasion.

The D-Day (Decision Day) invasion was a one day invasion, while Island Hopping took place over an extended period of time in an attempt to reach Japan. The D-Day invasion was much more planned out and involved so many people storming Normandy Beach. Island Hopping, although it was drawn out, consisted of a series of invasions, rather than one invasion. The similarity between the two methods is that the military is reaching a country through another country. D-Day invasion is more of a sprint to Germany, while island hopping is jumping around.

Janssen Day 1

Prompt: How did World War II transform American industry (make sure to utilize factual information from the clip)? Also, who was “Rosie the Riveter”?

Idle factories were back in business. With the war, American factories had something to make, tanks, guns, and ammunition. Mass production was taken to an all new level. Rosie the Riveter was a cultural icon for the United States representing American women. "We can do it" is propaganda for making the women work in the factories, but it was not too tough of labor.

Janssen Day 4

Select one of the following American identity groups (Japanese-Americans, women, or African Americans) and write a brief first-person narrative describing how America’s declaration of war has affected your life.

I, a Japanese-American was greatly affected after the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor. Even though I am an American citizen and was born in the United States, people think i am a Japanese spy. I now have to report at an internment camp even though I am just as much an American citizen as whites.

Day 3 Blog

Based on your reading, what motivated American involvement in World War II? Make sure that in your answer you discuss factors that led to war with both Germany and Japan.

Obviously, the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor caused the United States to enter the second world war. The day after the attack, the United States declared war on Japan. The United States knew about a potential attack from the Japanese, but did not know when the attack would strike or where they would strike. In Europe, the fall of Spain and France led the United States to the war. Hitler gave Francis Franco money to overthrow the government in Spain. Hitler took over most of France, leaving the allied powers with just Britain.
